Upstairs public floors

Under the carpet in the living room, dining room, upstairs hall, and library, we found some very special tile.
Living room.
Check out the single missing red tile 4' in front of the fire place.  Why is that one white?

The bad: this is probably asbestos tile, given the style of the tile and the age of the house.   Recommended treatment for asbestos is to seal it in place, which we are doing.  We are putting in a floating hardwood floor.  There's nothing to worry about here.

Let's bask in the design decisions that made this floor.
Hallway.
Dining room
Office.
This is not just plain tile.  This is square tiles in two colors with interspersed strips of black and a parquet theme.  These tiles thoughtfully laid out and arranged to accentuate each space and tie all these spaces together.  This is custom tile for a MCM builder/owner who wants a modern look but can't quite swing cork or travertine and wants bolder colors.

In the bedrooms, it is utility grey tile.  No character, just grey.  Out of sync with the care in the public areas and the love in the walls and closets.

There's so much about this house that points to custom design and loving maintenance over many years.

(btw: The dusty dirt rafts that got revealed when the carpets came up is gross.  Carpets are gross. Carpet underlayment is gross.)
